A good irrigation water management plan starts with a sound irrigation scheduling methodology; view this webinar to learn more.

Irrigation scheduling is an important aspect of broader irrigation water management. It is not an art (as portrayed by some), but science. An irrigation scheduling methodology helps determine how much water to apply and when to promote desired crop response and optimized use of available water supplies while enhancing soil, water, and air quality, and yield and profitability. Irrigation scheduling can be soil-, crop-, or climate-based or a combination of these. It can be strategic (i.e., applying water at regular intervals and in routine amounts) or tactical (applying water based on real-time data). The former can be wasteful of water, nutrients, and energy and thus unwise, but unfortunately common. By far, the most robust and practical irrigation scheduling method is based on direct measurement of soil moisture in the crop root zone. This webinar will discuss the superiority of soil moisture-based scheduling as compared to other climate and crop based methods. In addition, advances in soil moisture sensor technology, wireless data retrieval, and online deployment capabilities will be covered, so that NRCS field staff can better evaluate and guide land owners and TSPs in their irrigation water management plans.

This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS East National Technology Support Center.
