River Science for Non-Engineers reviews concepts and provides resources related to hydrology and fluvial geomorphology to provide a technical foundation for conservation planners and other resource professionals assisting in these areas.
Rivers integrate all that happens in a watershed, and deciphering the range of factors that affect how a system looks and functions is often accomplished by using tools and concepts of hydrology and fluvial geomorphology. However, not all resource professionals are trained in these fairly specialized disciplines. Further, conservation and management activities in and around rivers can present a daunting set of buzzwords, models, and theories. Aimed at conservation planners and other resource professionals who interact with landowners and partners in the field, this webinar provides an overview of the basics of watershed functions as they relate to rivers and streams. In addition, the influence of land use and management actions on stream condition is discussed, with examples from a number of different ecoregions. Resources are presented to aid conservation planners in landscape analysis, and links to primers on river science are provided. These primers, while short in length, provide useful information developed for conservation professionals without specialized backgrounds in hydrology and fluvial geomorphology. As a package, participation in the webinar and further reading of any or all of the suggested resources may help field planners better interact with landowners in considering river condition and identifying conservation actions.
