With an emphasis on prevention, this webinar provides an overview of how to successfully manage weeds, insects, and diseases in an organic production system.
Whether talking about insect or mite pests, diseases, or weeds, organic growers have fewer chemical tools available to them to deal with pests compared to conventional growers. Successful pest management in organic production systems is reliant on the concept of many “small hammers” working together. This is accomplished by supporting the system’s ecology, both above and below ground, along with limited and timely use of other inputs to successfully manage pests in organic systems. NCAT’s Rex Dufour discusses basic principles and practices for managing pests, focusing on the role of healthy soils in controlling pests, the importance of biodiversity, use of livestock and cover crops in pest management, and creating habitat for beneficial insects. The webinar concludes with a demonstration of NCAT’s Biorational: Ecological Management Database.
This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS East and West National Technology Support Centers.
