View this webinar to increase your understanding and application of nutrient and pest management strategies for successful production of organic small grains.
This webinar presents information about managing nutrients and controlling pests in organic small grain production. Nutrient management using crop rotations, cover crops, and approved organic supplements for nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium is discussed. A pest management hierarchy approached is also presented. The presenter explains that pest management is best achieved by building on a base of prevention practices, such as crop rotation and sanitation, progressing through avoidance activities, such as lures and traps, and concluding with suppression techniques as a last resort. A series of “many little hammers” is described as being the best approach to pest management in an organic system. The webinar concludes with a discussion on designing a crop rotation to meet the National Organic Program rules.
This webinar is sponsored by the USDA NRCS East and West National Technology Support Centers.
